Confused of Sydney

What do I blog? What do I Twitter? What do I Facebook update? Modern life is so confusing.

Not even a distant green light to be seen

M was up in Newcastle on her Masters placement last night, so I was on Bs duty. I fed and bathed them, B2 went to sleep perfectly and I left B1 happily playing in her room. She usually plays for a wee bit before going to sleep, and she always keeps her lamp on because she is fearful of the dark.

I wandered downstairs, idly wondering whether to watch a DVD or play a computer game when...plink! Blackout.

Cue loud, desperate wailing from B1's sanctum. I found my way up to her and gave her a cuddle and some reassuring words, which slowly changed her screams to quiet muttering, by way of choked sobs. I carefully carried her downstairs, found a matchbox and candles and made for my bedroom.

After a brief lesson in the nature of electricity and its incompatibility with rain, all ended happily with B1 sleeping in bed next to me while I read The Great Gatsby by candlelight.

M is busy tonight so I'm in charge again. Here's hoping for a quiet night.

How all movie criticism should work

Sounds like a subdural hematoma to me

I watched The Man With Two Brains roughly a zillion times when I was 15. It still kills:

What I did on my weekend

On Friday night I went out with Lou to see bouncily entertaining Queensland band The Grates. A mighty fine show and some intriguing pubs.

Saturday was a morning with M and the Bs to Fagan Park, which was already my favourite local-ish park and has now been souped up with a turbocharged playground. We couldn't get B1 off the zipwire, she was having a ball. Then we went for lunch at the local Malaysian place where B2 covered himself with peanut sauce. I wish I had taken a photo so I could have captioned it "The Satay Boy"

Sunday was the slightly dubious Aussie version of Mother's Day. M had a lie in and breakfast in bed, albeit undercooked pikelets and burnt bacon. The afternoon was spent enjoyably idling the day away with the collected in-laws at Janine and Graham's place. Very civilised.

Anyways, pictures were taken and video was recorded, now all duly posted at Flickr. Here's a B1 vid and B2 photo to give you a taster:

Sweeping, dusting, cooking and wailing

I've just posted a load of photos of the kids over on Flickr, including a special sequence of B2 helping with the domestic chores.

He's none too pleased about it, by the looks of things.

8 weeks

I realised this morning that I have precisely zero social engagements between now and Big Trip in 8 weeks. Nothing! For 8 weeks!

That could be my emptiest calendar EVER, quite literally. I'm sure that on the day I was born my mum must have been organising a trip to see my cousins or something. I have now reached the stage of my life where I can have nothing planned for 2 months except work and family duties.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's either strangely restful or profoundly depressing. I'll let you know in a few weeks.

(BTW, this is the 400th post on this blog. I'm sure that sending my inconsequential thoughts out into the ether and the concurrent social ostracism are entirely unconnected. No, really, I'm sure.)
